Roos turn into Bulls for a Country-conquering weekend

Geoff Mann Sport March 20-26 2014
Yes Sir!
All round sportsman Matt Saul has put aside his rugby boots and cricket bat in favour of hob-nails and a new 'umpire'!
Matt is currently saluting the Drill Sargent at Singleton Army Base before heading north to Townsville to complete his entry level training and kick-start his career in the Defence Force.
Matt joins a number of former Dubbo Kangaroos and RSL Colts cricketers who have made the decision to commit themselves to service of our country through the Armed Forces.
Angus Ryan (Army) and Simon Aird, Dave Mann and Michael Champion (RAAF) all came through Dubbo junior sporting ranks and maintain close ties with their old clubs.
No doubt Matt will be keeping an eye on the prrogress of his teammates - the Roos in their trials at Mudgee and the RSL-Colts teams in their semi-finals.
When "Oirish Eyes are Smoiling'!
Diarmaid O'Shea - 'DJ' to all and sundry - is a proud 'Paddy' and he's telling everyone that his beloved Irish Rugby team is Six-Nations Rugby Champ.
DJ was up till the early hours on Sunday morning making every tackle and scoring every try and goal as the 'Four Clover' boys scored a famous victory at Staid de France.
The hard-fought 22-20 victory over the passionate Frenchmen took its toll on the young fella who was still to be sighted at the St Patrick's Day Eve Party at the Pastoral late on Sunday afternoon!
DJ has ingrained himself in the local culture since making Dubvegas home about four or five years ago. The likeable rogue went back to Mum and Dad's for Christmas and came back to Oz confidently predicting that Brian O'Driscoll would wrap up his fabulous career with the velvet isle in glory.
Not a bad tip considering Ireland had just gone down to Australia in their last test!
DJ will don the blue and red of the Roos for this Saturday's trip to Mudgee, though methinks the O2 guernsey will get a showing at some stage!
Gotta love the Oirish! 'Dey shore no 'ow t' party'!
Central West Blue Bulls
Brad Pugh is one of five Dubbo players selected for Central West in the annual Country Rugby Union championships.
The tall back-rower joins 2013 Country Cockatoos Peter Nau (hooker) and Filisoni Pauta (wing) and newcomers Scott Burgess (utility back, who has just transferred from Narromine Gorillas) and new prop Enoch To'Ofohe.
Pughey's selection is being hailed by teammates abd club officials. The tough-as-teak back rower's selection comes after a series of impressive performances in the Bulls' lead-up matches.
"I'm stoked," he laughed. "It's been a goal of mine since I played with the junior Bulls as a Colt and I am really focused on developing my game at Country Week in Mudgee."
Pughey started his sporting life playing soccer and junior rugby league in Peak Hill before joining the Kangaroos Under-15s 10 years ago.
"I played in the grand-final that year, then with Under-17s, Colts in 2007, Second Grade in 2008 and first grade in 2012 for a zero from five record, so getting picked in the Blue Bulls is like winning a premiership for me," Brad chuckled.
He did back up from the losing Second Grade Grand Final to sit on the bench for the Roo's 2008 First Grade win, but Brad says he is still aiming for a Central West title in his own right.
"It was great to be on the bench when we won, but i still don't feel like that was 'mine' so I've been really focused over the past couple of years. I think we've matured as a team and with a couple of new faces this year, who knows, I might be in for a double-whammy."
Roos president Graeme Board was full of praise for the talented player.
"Pughey works harder than anyone at training. He's a great clubman, always upbeat and encouraging the younger blokes and puts up his hand for the club board and contributes in lots of different ways. His selection for the Blue Bulls is richly deserved," Graeme told me.
Graeme says its a feather in the cap for the club to have five players in the senior Central West team as well as Brad Collins who has joined this season.
"We acknowledge there are a few newcomers like Scotty, Mercy and Brad but turn over happens in all clubs. These guys add to the strength of our juniors," Graeme said.
"Brad's dad, Troy, played his early rugby with the Roos and I think he's pretty excited to see his son in the blue and red."
"He had a fine year with the Rhinos last season and played for NSW Country Under 18s on their end-of-season tour to Europe. He's still a Colt but could well challenge for a first grade spot this year."
Brad Pugh is certainly in good company in the Blue Bulls which includes five players from last year's grand finalists Parkes, five from the rejuvenated Bathurst Bulldogs, several CSU students and a strong contingent two-time Premiers Orange City included in the squad.
Country Week in Mudgee
The Central West Blue Bulls will chase Country Rugby Union's 'holy grail' at the Glen Willow Complex this weekend.
Five Dubbo Kangaroos first-graders and one Colt carry the hopes of the region in semi-final matches on Saturday.
Hooker Peter Nau and prop Enok To'Ofohe are among those hoping to go one better than last year.
The senior team returns to the prestigious first division Caldwell Cup after taking out the Richardson Shield last year, while Colts are looking for their first title in many years.

{module_photogallery,31697,4,,28,130,180}Happy Birthday Chris!
I’m old and I’m bitter, with nothing to fear,
So shut up and listen and get me a beer.
It might be my birthday but that won’t stop my rant
My thoughts, like good wine, I need to decant.
I’ve railed and I’ve raved since my dotage began
It’s my privilege ‘cos I’m a grumpy old man.
As I grow older; it’s life I suppose:
But more and more things just get up my nose.
Traffic lights, at the bank at in supermarket queues
Waiting in line just gives me the poos
I want to get done as fast as I can
It’s only fair, I’m a grumpy old man.
I hate these computers, with their silly programs,
The wifi won’t work and the printer just jams
When my daughter can’t help me figure it out
I throw things and kick things, I scream and I shout
For dealing with my anger I should have a plan
But I can’t be bothered as I’m a grumpy old man
On the road my short fuse is put to the test
When it comes to the rules, I always know best!
If cars go too slow I’m prone to tail-gate,
Caus’ idiot drivers just make me irate
If you see me coming in my Darrell Lea van
I’d get out of the way of this grumpy old man
I love to dance- though not to the beat,
You should try it, you know, it’s quite a mean feat.
I’ll develop an obsession to any new craze
The same song or band on repeat for days
Of my newest love, the wife’s not a fan,
But I don’t really care- I’m a grumpy old man.
I’m in my garden picking herbs every day
To go in Wasim’s special salsa verde
I’m stealing his recipes and learning his tricks
A new way to poach eggs just thrilled me to bits.
And while a café’s always been in my plan
I don’t know who’d work with this grumpy old man
There's food down my shirt-front and some on my face
Because I eat at an alarming pace
I lounge in my armchair while watching the telly
And my food drips unheeded all over my belly
It's a trait of the aged from here to Japan;
Just a perk for being a Grumpy old man
If you can’t find me I’ll give you some clues,
It starts with Dubbo and ends with ‘Roos
If I’m not at the clubhouse, I’ll be at the bar,
Drinking lime cordial in my Coran-a
Ngaire might want a Rugby Club ban
But I’ll keep on going- I’m a grumpy old man.
My temper is short, my patience is thin
And there’s stubble all over my double chin.
My face is red, my tummy’s fat
And I’ve been known to kick the cat.
But I’m doing the best I can,
Life is hard for a grumpy old man
And while his habits drive his family nuts
And sometimes I think that I hate his guts
We can’t help but love him in his old age
Despite his snoring and untameable rage
So now, surrounded by all the clan
Let’s say Happy Birthday to the grumpy old man!
Poem written by Chris' daughter, Micaela.

Roos and Gorillas to face off in first round of Central West Draw
The Dubbo Kangaroos will face Narromine in the first round of the 2014 Blowes Clothing Cup season while the Orange City Lions meet Parkes in a grand final rematch during a bumper first round.
Newcomers Mudgee will travel to Forbes for their first match in the competition in seven years after Central West chief executive officer Peter Veenstra confirmed the draw, which kicks off on Saturday, April 5, and runs for 18 rounds.
Incoming Kangaroos coach Paul Hennock, who coached Narromine in 2009, said it will be the perfect way for his side to start the season.
"It's always good to start the season at home and with a local derby to really get the juices flowing," he said.
"I know when I was at Narromine they always liked to get one over Dubbo, it's a bit of a big brother, little brother match."
The Roos face a stern challenge to start the season as they follow the match against the Gorillas with trips to Orange and Bathurst to take on defending premiers Orange City and the Bulldogs respectively.
"It's three hard games to start off with and Orange City have been the benchmark so it will be good to know where we stand early," Hennock said.
The competition will feature two rivalry rounds and breaks for Easter and Queen's Birthday long weekends.
The semi-finals will begin on August 23 and the grand final will be played on Saturday, September 13. It will be hosted by the team that wins the major semi-final on August 30.
The 2014 draw is an exact replica of the 2011 version except Mudgee replaces the Dubbo Rhinos.
The Rhinos will play their second year in the Australian National Field Days northern conference while Mudgee steps up to the top tier for the first time since 2007.
As has been the case in the past, all teams have the same amount of home and away matches.
For this season, clubs have nine home and nine away matches.
Rounds nine and 18 will be the rivalry rounds where Bathurst Bulldogs take on Charles Sturt University, City meet Orange Emus, Cowra are against Forbes, Parkes host Narromine and Mudgee are at home to Dubbo Kangaroos.
Hennock went on to say the Roos would start training on January 28 and added he was already putting together plans for season 2014.
"My views might be a little different to the last few years but I've been talking to the other coaches and formulating some plans so we're looking forward to it," he said.
Sourced from the Daily Liberal.New Home for the Roos
The Roos have found a new ‘home’ this year, with major sponsor, The Commercial Hotel. Renovations, to be starting shortly, will transform the Commercial into a modern, family friendly, sporting hotel where everyone feels welcome.
Season Launch and Pre-season Training
The Commercial will be hosting the Roos Season Launch on Friday 31st January. This will be a night to celebrate community partnerships and welcome new jersey sponsor Western Plains Automotive. Sponsors will have the opportunity to meet players, supporters and club members and last years players will be presented with their jerseys. The evening is open to all and activities will commence at 6pm.
New players are always welcome at the Roos, and if you are interested in playing this season head along to pre-season training, starting on Tuesday 26th January, 6pm at St Johns Ovals, Sheraton Road or register your interest at the season launch.
