Dubbo Rugby Union player Jim Ley was cautioned by a Judiciary meeting of the Central West Zone at Orange last night.

Ley was ordered from the field in the clash between Dubbo First Grade and Molong at No.1 Oval on Saturday.

Cumnock referee David Hock in a statemento the judiciary meeting last night said Ley had fended with a closed hand.

Both Ley and Dubbo captain Rob Wray attended the hearing.

Dubbo officials were disturbed at a report in one Central Western newspaper that Ley had made a stiff-arm tackle.

In his statement, Mr Nock said he considered his decision to order Ley off was sufficient punishment to both the individual and to the team.

Saturday's match was unusually heated and prior to ordering Ley off, Mr Nock has issues a warning against foul play./p>

A Wellington player also was summoned to attend the judiciary meeting but failed to appear.

The player, Reg Gardoll is reported to have had a disagreement with the referee, and was ordered from the field.

Four former international rugby union stars will appear in the Dubbo Rugby Union Club knockout on Saturday.

Ten teams, including St. George, will compete in the full day knockout with top teams from the Far West, and the Riverina also taking part.

The four international players who will appear are Dubbo Geoff CHapman, Cobar centre Bruce Harland. St George captain Eddie Stapleton and his team-mate Terry C. Casey.

There will also be several State representatives, including Dubbo's Ken Murray, and a host of country representatives.

They are Temora and Young.

Young are captained by Church of England minister Mike Barbra who is reported to be a fiery front row forward, and Temora includes Tony Gellings who played in last weekend's Wallaby Tour trials.

Central West's star-studded teams Molong (the premiers) and semi-finalists Mudgee and Orange will represent the powerful Central West competition.

State representatives John Brazier and John Stegman will appear with the Molong team.

Cobar, who lost the Far West competition premiership for the first time in four years to Dubbo this year are also a pwerful team including Harland and former State players Greg Prince and Chris Forbes.

Tottenham and Trangie will field a combined side for the day and the only other Far West team in the competition will be the premiers, Dubbo.

Former Dubbo club president Alan Murdoch has induced a Wollongong side to make the long trip bringing the total nominations to 10.

Play will commence at around 9.30 am and continue throughout the day.

The original Dubbo Macquarie football team played rugby union in long pants, but according to "Telly" Samuels, who was a member of the team, they would have put it up to the present day Macquarie league boys.

Another old supporter of the team, Mr Haold Taylor, whose brother George was also in the team, assisted in identifying the players for present day rugby union coach Wally Kin.

"Telly" Samuels is the only known surviving member of that team and still lives in Dubbo.

He can recall the feats of the side in which he played as a youth 67 years ago.

He and Harold Taylor identified all of the players in the team for us with the exception of one player, whom neither could recall.

In the back row of the picture (published above) are shown the club secretary Billy Tank on the left and the Team coach Ernie Howe on the right.

Billy Tink was a member of the well known Tink family of Dubbo and Ernie Howe worked in the Dubbo Lands Office for some years but was later transferred.

Second from the left in Tom Tourle who worked in the Commercial Bank and was the father of Miss Jess Tourle of Dubbo.

Next to Tom Tourle is George Rich, a plumber whose decendants are thought to still be in Dubbo.

Harold Taylor's brother George is the tall player in the white cap.

The captain of the team, holding the ball was Jack Hives a noted sportsman of the day and a member of theHayes family who owned the cordial factory.

Dick Baird is next in line. He was a grazier who later went to the Boer War and was wounded, returning with a stiff leg and played no more football.

"Telly" Samueld, the only known surviving member of the team, now aged 90 os the father of Dubbo solicitor Bert Samuels.

Another member of a well known Dubbo family was Alf Wheeler, next to Samuels, the father of well known grazier Gordon Wheeler who first bought the old photograph to Wally King.

In the front line on the left is Bob Craig about whom we could find out nothing except that he was a very fine footballer.

Then "Bollie" Frawley another about whom little is known.

The third player is a "mystery man" - we cannot find his name.

Fourth from the left is Art Wheeler, brother of Alf and next to him Martin who was a local carrier.

Then comes one of the most noted sportsman of the team Neil Hives, who was a brother of the skipper and known as the top cricketer and footballer of the town.

With the cross on the front of his jersey is Angus Samuels, a brother of "Telly" and ob the right another about whom only his name is known - R. O'Connor.

Was this the first football team or were there others before it?

Dubbo Rugby Union team won the Far West premiership with a stirring 12/6 win over Walgett in a rugged grand final at Coonamble.

Geoff Chapman scored all of Dubbo's points with three penalty goals and a field goal in a tryless match.

The fast moving, mobile Dubbo forwards paved the way for the victory with a non-stop display of rucking to dominate the forward play.

The game was a tough forward battle on a ground made heavy and slow by rain during the week.

The fast Dubbo backline had a quiet day though they looked dangerous on the few occaisions when they were allowed to move.

The game was won by Dubbo forwards, who despite losing the ball in line outs were able to win more of the lose rucks and keep Walgett on the defensive.

Referee Rex Lamb handed out a number of general cautions to both sides and kept the game well under control.

Best of Dubbo's backs was again Geoff Clarke.

His positional play and kicking from the fullback was first class.

Play was mainly in Walgett half but their defence held as their back line did not allow Dubbo backs any room at all.

Dubbo opened the scoring when CHapman landed his first penalty goal after five minutes of play, and they were not headed after this.

Dubbo was outweighted in the forwards but the lightweights made up in speed and condition what they lacked in weight.

At half time Dubbo held a commanding 9-6 lead and kept on top for the remainder of the game in spite of a spirited fightback by Walgett.

The Dubbo club will hold it's presentation dinner on Friday night to wind up it's most successful season ever.

Dubbo meets Walgett on Saturday in the grand final of the Far West rugby union competition at Coonamble.

Walgett caused a major upset last week when they defeated Cobar in the final.

The two teams have met twice previously - the first, a 14-3 win for Walgett, being the only defeat suffered by Dubbi in competition fixtures this year.

Dubbo turned the tables in the second round with a convincing 22-6 victory, but past results have little bearing on Saturday's game.

Both teams have shown a remarkable capacity to play above themselves when the occaision demands.

The styles of the grand finalists make an interesting contrast.

Walgett reky on a heavy share of ball from set play with their robust, experienced forwards keeping play tight.

Dubbo play for a quick ball in the loose for penetration by their elusive and imaginative backs.

The Walgett front row of the Coless brothers and Glen Friend is the most tried and experienced in the WEst, aid their teams scrummaging is good.

Breakaways O'Brien and newcomer Rissel Chapman add some speed, adn second rower Skulthorpe is in great form.

Their excellent drill in lineouts has been a feature of Walgett's last few games.

The Dubbo pack will give them a stern test.

They seem to fins that little extra drive against Walgett.

They give nothing away in fire and vigour and should at least match Walgett in the scrums.

Intelligent play could swing lineouts in their favour, but foraging for the loose ball will be the most important task and here big Dick Brown, Tolhurst and Ron Soden are key men.

If Dubbo have any real superiority it is in the backs, and here Chapman, Murray and Clarke could be the factor to swing the balance in their team's favour.

They have at their command a tremendous variety in attacking moves from set scrums, rucks and line-outs, and the ability to produce whatever tactics the strategic situation demands of them.

Dubbo were forced to call on the experience of their top players to defeat the touring South Otago Rugby Union side 8/6 on Saturday in a torrid match.

The match was highlighted by rugged forward play, in which the Dubbo side were given the advantage by the leadership of Wallaby Jon White who inspired his team-mates to lift their game when the pressure was on them.

Both teams turned in a non-stop display, with the forwards outstanding as they battled to swing the game.

South Otago were best served by their two prop forwards, Dennis Holden and Stewart McDougall who were tireless in the tight play.

Holden in particular was a tower of strength, particularly in the loose rucks where he continually troubled the Dubbo side with the vigor of his play.

Captain John Wilson was the outstanding back, showing a touch of class in the way he eluded Dubbo's breakaways time after time to set his backs moving.

But much of his good work nullified by the bustling tackling of the Dubbo backs.

Young Dubbo wingers Alan Furney and Michael Dowd were outstanding in defence, breaking up the threatending moves of the visitors again and again, and moving across in cover defence to stop many raids.

Dubbo's back-row forwards gave a great exhibitorion of constructive play and hard tackling of the inside backs.

Lock Geoff Radburn was tigerish in defence and made several dangerous moves from the scrum base.

Ray Tolhurst and Alex Morrison were at their best to the final bell with bustling forward play in attack and defence.

Hard-running Geoff Chapman gave the South Otago defence some anxious moments, adn scored the first try of the match, finishing off a high-pressure attack on the tourists line by charging over in the corner.

The match opened at a great pace, with Dubbo pouring on the pressure as they broke into South Otago territory and they continued the attack until Chapman went over for the try to draw first blood.

Radburn failed with the difficult conversion attempt and Dubbo led 3-0.

The New Zealanders then fought back to force Dubbo onto the defensive with a burst of powerhouse play.

Real All Rounder

Dubbos rugby union coach Wally King, returned to the game this year after nine years of retirement.

A man who has always kept himself fit, Wally soon demonstrated to his team that he was a hard coach and expected the players to do everything he did at training.

Wally King, (pictured at right), first began to make a mark in the football world when he respresented Combined High Schools in 1942 as a second-row forward.

The following year he joined the R.A.N. and went to war, but his football career went on whenever opportunity presented itself and by war's end he was well established as an outstanding player.

During his years in the Navy, he played for various ships in their competitions and captained H.M.A.S. Kybra to win the Dempster Cup in 1945.

The same year he was chosen to tour the eastern states of Australia with the combined Naval side, selected from Australian, British, New Zealand and South African ships.

The war ended and Wally King went straight into St. George first grade and stayed there until 1954.

In 1948 and '49 he played for South Harbor against North Harbor and was regarded as unlucky to miss State selection.

During the five years from 1948 to 1952 he also played with the Police team in the midweek competition which they won in three of those years.

His only year out of football was 1950 when he had to stand down with cartilage trouble. BUt he spent the season coaching the Metropolitan Colts team and took them to wins over Queensland Colts, Newcastle Colts and Duntroon.

In 1956 Wally came to Dubbo as Police Presecutor and was soon back into football, this time captain-coach of the Dubbo side in 1957.

He went on to be selected as captian-coach of the Western Districts team at Country Week the same year and for the first time Western Districts won a game at Country Week.

Better than that, they won their way to the final.

Then, in the same season he captained the Western District team against the touring All Blacks at Warren.

Now after nine years Wally King is back.

But it hasn't been all Rugby. Wally also was a fine surfer, water polo player and swimmer.

He was vice captian of Cronulla Surf Club, rowed in the Cronulla senior boat crew and was runner up for the senior belt championship three times.

He played water polo for the Navy, St. George and Cronulla Surf Club.

He was foundation captain of the Dubbo R.S.L. Swimming Club and foundation president of the Dubbo Squash Club.

And for good measure, Wally is a keen golfer and Gun Club Member.

Lack of interest shown by the Dubbo Rugby League in the recently started inter-club reserve grade competition is claimed to have caused North Dubbo Rugby League Club to switch to Rugby Union.

At a special meeting last night between the executive of the Dubbo Rugby Union and the Club officials permission was granted for the 28 players of the League CLub to form a North Dubbo Rugby Union Club.

Another factor in causing the change officials of the club state was the lack of grounds for matches.

They said that they had recently sought permission for the DRL to travel at weekends but had not received any reply.

The 28 players, under captain coach R. Austin will take part in the Western Zone Rugby Union competition thus removing the present bye each week.

The addition of the team will infuse new life into the Rugby Union in Dubbo and will strengthen the present team which has been consistently short of players.

It is believed that of the other clubs formed to play Rugby League this year that at least one other is considering a change of code.

The North club was reformed this year after more than 20 years out of existence and has been well supported by residents of the area.

At the end of the last Rugby League season some players who had been discontented with the interest shown by the DRL threatened to change codes.
